Why is he a Wraith?
By now you probably realize that the classifications of "Wraith", "Demons" and "Saints" etc are completely arbitrary. They are just another reason to soup-up the most popular characters to the point of being silly. Wraith Zhang Jiao is one good example of a souped-up character that went from "incredible" to "incredulous". Seriously, this guy's ability exceed the Demi-God's by such a magnitude that you should be questioning, "how could anyone (bar noobs) lose with such a character?!"
The answer is, obviously, when the other players are all using unofficial characters as well. Ho-hum.
Character ability 1: Tranquility 太平 (tài píng)
In the action phase, you can use two on-hand cards with the same suit as the following:
Both spades: BARBARIANS 南蛮入侵
Both hearts: RAINING ARROWS 万箭齐发
Both clubs: HARVEST 五谷丰登
Both diamonds: PEACH GARDEN 桃园结义
Limited to one use per turn.
Character ability 2: Heavenly Rudiment 甲子 (jiǎ zǐ)
At the end of your turn, refill your on-hand cards to your current number of health units.
Character ability 3: Legion of Disciples 徒众 (tú zhòng)
[Ruler ability] You can choose to skip your drawing phase and allow any player or your choice to regain 1 unit of health.
Ability's relation to story:
The titles of the abilities have strong links to the ROTK story. Zhang Jiao claims to be the "Teacher" who is descended from heaven. His path to revolution stems from attaining "peace" by removing the crumbling Han Dynasty. Numerous disciples followed him into battle, but they were ultimately all crushed by the Han loyalists.
The abilities of Wraith Zhang Jiao, on the other hand, have absolutely no links to the story whatsoever!
Usage comments:
"Tranquility" is probably THE MOST ridiculously powerful ability that has appeared in mainstream SGS. Of course, lots more insane abilities are out there hidden in obscure characters limited only by the human imagination, but most of these do not make it into SGS products. This guy is like Yuan Shao 袁绍 on steroids!!
Repeated use of "spades" and "hearts" with "Tranquility" will wipe the table clean of ATTACKs and DODGEs. The players whose turn is furthest from Wraith Zhang Jiao is like a butt-naked child waiting in a long line before he gets some decent clothing. And just to show off his omni-potency, Wraith Zhang Jiao can then use "clubs" as a show of compassion or "diamonds" just to keep the stragglers alive long enough for the other players to have their fun before murdering them through and through.
If there was a character that could mess with fate, this is it.
Wait!! Hang on!!! "Tranquility" can only be used ONCE every turn. So i guess it's not so bad after all. Hmm...
